David's Ultrasound Thursday, June 21, 2007
Picked By Ceriseno
He has been hailed as the Chinese godfather of R&B and his success along with the frenetic reaction of music lovers everywhere says it all. David Tao simply has that special sound - Ultrasound.
The 38-year-old singer/songwriter no doubt has music in his veins, which may partly be inherited from his father, David Tao (Tao's original name was Anthony, but he changed it to David later on), who also used to be a well-known singer in his younger years. No doubt, David Tao is today a source of pride for his father. Here are a few comments on the material featured on Tao's Ultrasound. Melody comes blowing in as a melancholic ballad reminiscing about opportunities lost in the past, while Shanghaied (CD 1/Track 1) presents a groovy up-tempo tune. The latter revolves around girls and boys reveling beneath the glitter of Shanghai's neon lights with no intentions to go home as the original song title, "Not Going Home Today", implies. I Like It (CD 1/Track 8) involves more positive sounds as Tao sings about the quest for natural simple things that lead to happiness and laughter. Close To You (CD 1/Track 9) drifts down to more romantic levels, unveiling what's on the mind of a lover who longs for his dear one. Finally, there is no way around Tao's standard ballad, that is simply called I Love You (CD 1/Track 14 - the original title literally reads as "Love Is Very Simple"). Amid all its naiveté there are traces of truth to be found in this song about a person's romantic confessions. Even though this song adheres to such old fashioned lines as "The world may keep changing constantly, but if you sincerely try, love becomes easy", Tao has pepped it up with enough good feel and R&B to turn it into a classic worth its replay value.
Overall, this release includes a good number of melodious songs, ranging from rock to R&B and alternative music among other elements, that all blend seamlessly into Tao's specific Ultrasound.
