Taiwanese singer-songwriter David Tao has emerged as a strong contender in next month's Golden Melody Awards -- one of the most prestigious awards in the Chinese-language music industry.
Tao bagged five nominations, including nods for song of the year, best Mandarin pop album and best Mandarin male singer ahead of the June 10 ceremony in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.
Tao, known for exploring serious topics, was nominated for his album "The Great Leap 2005." In one track on the album, "Ghost," he examines the oppressiveness of city living.
Tao is also up for best producer and best musical arrangement, according to the nominations, announced over the weekend.
Glaringly absent in the top categories is Taiwan's Jay Chou, one of the Chinese recording industry's biggest acts.
Chou has suffered a losing streak at the Golden Melodies. Last year, he was nominated for best record and best male artist, but he struck out in both categories.
Taiwan's Fang Wenshan was nominated for best lyricist for "Hair Like Snow," from Chou's album last year, "November's Chopin." From the same album is "Blue Storm," which won arranger Hong Jingyao a nomination.
Tao's song of the year nomination is "The Art of War." The other contenders are "Fish that Likes to Dream," sung by Taiwan's Judy Chiang, "Pacific Wind" by Taiwan's Hu Defu and Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai and China Blue's "Made in Taiwan."
In the best male artist category, Tao faces stiff competition in the likes of Hong Kong pop king Jacky Cheung, Taiwanese vocalist Terry Lin, formerly of the pop duo Ukulele, as well as Taiwanese singer-songwriter Leehom Wang.
Singapore's Stefanie Sun will attempt to win a second consecutive best female artist award, but she's nominated in a crowded category that sees her pitted against six other pop stars, including Malaysia's Fish Leong, Singapore's Tanya Chua, Malaysia's Penny Tai and Taiwan's Cheer Chen.
Chen, Tai and Chua are also competing in the best Mandarin album category. Chen's "A Fabulous Adventure," Chua's "Amphibian" and "Tai's "Crazy Love" could snatch bragging rights away from Tao's "The Great Leap 2005."
This year's nominees were drawn from 6,883 entries submitted by 153 record companies, organizers said in a statement.

Got so excited with the nominees that I may just watch GMA this yr whether or not David attend. Hopefully Wubai will perform or even Terry Lin whom I always enjoy listening. Wang Jisan who equalled David's 6 nominations said that he had sang with Tao Dawei before then praised David & hoped to collaborate with David in his new album.

More HK concert clips @ youtube! This one shows him playing David Tan's guitar while singing Regular Friend. He sang it completely different from Soul Power with more tone variation. Incredible how he can just switch from low to high with amazing ease. After watching this, its really irrelevant to me whether or not he win the best male singer. He is just in a different class.
