The Golden Lion @ Venice Film Festival has gone to a little-known Chinese film by Jia Zhangke called Still Life which is abt the impact of the controversial Three Gorges Dam project in China. This film, like most of Jia's films, will most likely not be able to screen in mainland China. Anyway goes to show that it dun required big budget costumed epics for Chinese directors to win international awards. I only seen one of Jia's film, The World, which is also the only one that is allowed to be screened in China. Jonathan Rosembaum named it the top movie of 2005. Quite a brilliant movie but not very accessible. It really does paint a rather gloomy picture of the possible future & further development of China, although Jia did leave a slight ray of hope at the end. The other interesting thing abt Jia is like WKW, he would have various characters in his movies speak in their native dialect to inject realism. Not all Chinese speak the same language, in fact most don't & Mandarin can be as foreign as Korean or Japanese in some parts of China. Guess David knew of this - another Chinese director receiving world recognition - & hopefully it will inspire him in his movie dream ^__^
