BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The opening ceremony of the China Environmental Protection Festival 2005 was held here Wednesday.
Five Chinese environmentalists were awarded the top governmental prize in environmental protection.
Tian Guirong, a farmer from central China's Henan Province who collected used batteries at her own expense was among the winners, dubbed as the Green China Annual Figures.
At the awarding ceremony, celebrities like TV hostess Yang Lan, Taiwan singer Jeff Chang and R&B composer David Tao received certificates of "Chinese Environment Ambassador" from the State Environmental Protection Administration.
At the opening of the festival, Hongkong and Taiwanese singers such as Jackie Chan, David Tao and Jeff Chang, together with mainland celebrities staged a grand performance to promote environmental protection awareness in the country. World renowned Chinese tenor Dai Yuqiang sang "Green China", the theme song for the festival, with two other tenors.
Klaus Toepfer, under secretary of the United Nations and executive director of the Nairobi-based UN Environment Program attended the ceremony and presented prizes to winners.
During the month-long festival, west China's Qinghai Province and east China's Fujian Province will host various cultural activities to heighten the public's environmental protection awareness.
Also reported @ crionline, no pixs at the moment maybe later hopefully with Jackie Chan & Jeff Chang. So proud of him, he always set out to fulfil what he said. Sum ppl dun get theme of conservation with Love Can, its simple, u must first love the environment & then try to preserve it. Just saying 'oh yes the environment is important we must save it' not enough, always do something with sincerity, with effort, with love, or u end up not doing much. Could be why I nvr could like Bono despite all his efforts to help the world's poor cos I nvr could feel his sincerity or his love. Like he is doing it cos he felt he had to nor cos he wanted to. But its just me cos Bono is still a good guy for doing so much for charity.
Btw saw Bob Geldof received award from Madonna @ recent AMA & I like him much better cos he obviously sincere & 100% percent into his charity work. He also got a Man of Peace award for his anti-poverty efforts, what a great guy! I hope one day David will also get a Man of Peace award. Again sum criticised his concert as like evangelistic event, this is just cos David is being himself, he is showing his true sincere self which is a man of God preaching love, peace & conservation through great music. Maybe sum might sneer at it but much better than concert with scantily clothed models simulating sex as far as I am concerned. Anyway so proud of my idol, MY HERO!

I did reflect that his Love Can concert did not tie in well with conservation. I know it's simple to link the two. But just felt that one has to uncover several layers in order to realise what the theme means. Pedagogically not sound, if the concert were to 'teach' /bring across a message to the audience. =p I did NOT criticise that his concert was like an evangelistic event. Criticise seems to connote that it was a negative comment. I never meant it that way. In fact,i welcome that idea...cus the way he did it was not stifling, instead he was open and respectful to non-christians at the concert, yet not shy to acknowledge God for his grace and love. =)
erm dun meant to finger anyone just sum reviews I read okie :D thks for yr comments.
