For this month’s journal, I’d like to do something different and, instead, write a “review” of one of my favorite albums by The Beatles: The White Album. Most people that know me well know that my biggest music influence has been the Beatles. I’ve referred to them many times over in interviews but I’ve seldom gone into depth about their music and songs. One of the reasons why I want to write this review is because I want to introduce (or re-introduce) you to the Beatles, especially, this album. Of course, almost everybody born during the past 60 years or so has heard of the band but I find the majority of people don’t really know their music in depth and what made them so influential. I’m sure most of you have heard the familiar Beatles’ hits such as “Hey, Jude” or “Let it Be” but much of their best and most influential work were not these songs. I would say that The Beatles are one of the most influential artists of all time even more so than Elvis Presley who was more a pop icon of his era.
I’d like to clarify that this is not a review in the traditional sense. It is not meant to be a critical review like the ones you’d find in a magazine. It is, rather, a collection of thoughts and my opinion of what I feel for this album. Of course, it’s important that you purchase a legal copy of this album (physical or digital download), give it a listen as you read this so you’ll know what I’m referring to.
The “White Album” was the Beatles’ ninth album released in 1968 (a year before I was born) as a double album. It was unofficially referred to as “The White Album” because there was no other text on the white cover other than the band’s name. In my opinion, this album is one of the band’s greatest because it was on cutting edge in every aspect yet at the same time very musical and accessible. It was both experimental yet melodic, warm and inviting. The production was top notch and the writing (both melody and lyrics) represented Lennon and McCartney at their best. This was the first time that the Beatles began using 8-track recording which allowed them to do much more in terms of overdubbing and layering their arrangements. By today’s standards and technology, we are capable of unlimited tracks with only a home computer so you can imagine recording with merely 8-tracks would be quite a challenge! This only goes to illustrate that it’s the content that matters and not the tools you use.
The album kicks off with “Back in the USSR” which makes clever use of an airplane taking off and landing sound efx. It’s a straight-ahead rock and roll song with nice vocal harmonies obviously influenced by The Beach Boys. The sound of the song is clearly American but the irony is that the topic of the song revolves around a then not-so-cool Soviet Union. The second song, “Dear Prudence”, is a Lennon song that has been covered by many other bands and artists giving it a kind of cult status. The song is deceptively simple and based on only three chords repeating over and over again creating a hypnotic drone. I really like the electric guitars as they play a very interesting Indian sounding scale and motif as the song gradually builds into a climax. I feel this song influenced many contemporary rock bands in its dark and somber setting. “The White Album” didn’t have the chart topping commercial Beatles hits but it still produced many innovative singles. The fourth song, “Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da”, was one of those hits and was written by Paul McCartney. From young, I always liked the festive calypso atmosphere, creative background vocals and thinly voiced honky-tonk piano. The contrast between the sweet lyrics and the way McCartney wildly belts out the final choruses generates a lot of power.
“The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” influenced me a lot in the way Lennon slowly unfolded a story drawing the listener in with each section’s plot. The song comes off as a children’s song but upon closer inspection you realize that it’s quite macabre. Lennon’s humor and sarcasm in this song and in his other works is also something that sets him apart from other writers.
George Harrison didn’t have many contributions to the Beatles’ repertoire but “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was one of his more notable ones. The chordal and melodic structure is very representative of Harrison with his use of complicated progressions and twisted melodies. It’s interesting to note that the guitar solo was played by Eric Clapton who was a contemporary of The Beatles and a major artist (and guitar hero)in his own right. I personally feel that Harrison’s writing always lacked emotion and wasn’t as direct as John or Paul’s. He seems to try very hard to do something different often times sacrificing function for form.
“Happiness is a Warm Gun” is one of my favorite songs on the album because both the melody and lyrics are incredibly innovative and witty. The song has 6 separate sections each with it’s own distinctive melodies yet the song feels so well integrated and complete. The emotion delivered is powerful and focused yet there are so many layers. John’s vocal is brutally raw towards the finale of the song and it really shows his unabashed and unapologetic personality. “Martha My Dear” is classic McCartney with his polished orchestrations and sweet melodies. I used to prefer McCartney’s writing to Lennon’s but as I grew older I preferred the latter’s edge, depth and social consciousness in his writing. McCartney’s songs (and perhaps his personality) were typically sweet, amicable and pleasant. His music was always easy to listen to but didn’t have the power and explosiveness of Lennon’s works. “I’m So Tired” is another Lennon song that I really like on the album. It’s fairly straightforward but the lyrics and Lennon’s vocal delivery (particularly his mumbling at the end of the song) express his restlessness and frustration so perfectly.
One of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar was McCartney’s “Blackbird”. It’s a very charming little ditty displaying what I feel is Paul’s best writing. It’s unpretentious, simple yet very illusive and touching. If you feel up to the challenge try to learn it-I did when I was about fifteen years old! “Piggies” is a Harrison song that again makes clever use of sound efx which actually is quite prevalent in Beatles’ songs. This was something that I always liked when I was young because it somehow made the song feel more real and involving. I like the arrangement of the song particularly the use of harpsichord and string quartet mixing irreverently a bit of blues with a very Bach inspired chordal progression. “I Will” is one of my favorite McCartney songs because it’s just so well written. The song is sweet and sincere in a very effortless manner. It reminds me of a Gilbert O’Sullivan song titled “Alone Again” which has no similarity except in perhaps how well crafted they both are.
“Julia” is Lennon’s ode to his mother who passed away when he was very young. I was very touched by the lyrics especially the strong imagery he invokes with the words, “seashell eyes, windy smile, calls me, so I sing a song of love, Julia…” The bridge melody always struck me as being influenced by Japanese music possibly due to his wife, Yoko? The song is very quiet, tinged with sadness yet at the same time a bit eerie with the use of certain chords giving it a dreamy quality.
I’m not quite sure why Paul wrote “Birthday” but it’s one of those straight ahead rock and roll tunes that show the Beatles knew how to keep things simple and just rock out. Most of the songs that ended up on the album were written in India during a transcendental meditation retreat the Beatles took in 1968. It was obvious that during this retreat Lennon and McCartney experienced a surge of inspiration and liberation and wrote some of their best works there. Even though the songs didn’t necessarily reflect Indian music references, the entire album exhibited a level of creativity and experimentation that would continue further on in future Beatles’ albums such as “Yellow Submarine”. “Sexy Sadie” used two descending dominant 7th chords that really fascinated me when I started writing songs. It wasn’t anything difficult but somehow it managed to convey a certain playfulness and devilish charm that the lyrics wrote about. There’s something magical about Lennon’s lyrics again and the background vocals and guitar parts are just as amazing.
I never liked “Helter Skelter” but it definitely was a predecessor to what we now know as Heavy Metal but with less distortion on the guitars. I felt it was McCartney’s attempt at staking his claim as a hard rocker but for me it just wasn’t convincing enough. “Revolution 1” is one of Lennon’s most classic songs though there’s another heavier version simply called “Revolution” not on this album that I like much more. The lyrics are controversial and showed Lennon’s political and social awareness that was to be one of his musical signatures. If you get a chance read through the lyrics and I think you’ll know what I’m talking about.
“Honey Pie” is another one of McCartney’s pseudo-period pieces this time with a 1920’s cabaret sound. When McCartney does this and when it works it’s simply magnificent. It’s got a lot of charm and personality and is simply just fun to listen to. Listen to the awesome horn section and clarinet arrangement and you’ll see how dynamic and well versed both Lennon and McCartney were musically. A song on my second album, “馬戲團“, was very much influenced by this song but much more exaggerated and blown up.
The amazing thing about “The White Album” is its wide range of music styles and diversity in its subject matter. However, for me the album never felt chaotic or tiresome but, rather, everything came together beautifully. “Revolution 9” is an experimental collage of sounds comprised of tape edits and sound processing. Maybe not pleasant to listen to it did, however, showcase the avant-garde spirit of the band especially Lennon’s desire to push the envelope. Some say that Lennon’s “Revolution 9” was very much inspired by his wife, Yoko, who was an avant-garde performing artist herself. This was a piece that must have been equally praised and criticized by listeners as it seemed out of place on the album (should have belonged on a Stockhausen album perhaps) but I feel it was an admirable challenge. “Goodnight” is the last song on the album and provided a warm closing to a long yet enlightening musical journey. The song is sung by Ringo Starr who is the drummer and not known for his singing ability. I personally quite like the song and feel Starr’s vocal delivery is very effective as his voice is earnest and unpolished. It reminds me of the old Disney songs with their lush orchestrations and tender melodies.
“The White Album” is such a rich and masterful album that has both educated and touched me from my youth till now. It is an album that I would love to share with you especially if you tire of today’s music. There is a wealth of emotion, musical and technical genius for everybody from the casual listener to the professional musician. There are many other great Beatles’ albums that I might “review” in the future but, for now, I’d like to present to you one of my favorite albums of all time. It’s still as fresh now as when I heard it for the first time nearly 25 years ago.
Enjoy it, DT

White Album review by DT
Surprising but very pleasantly indeed DT wrote a journal entry on Beatles' White Album. Hm ... he could probably switch career to album reviewer if he wanted to ^__^
DT @ Quangzhou
David in Quangzhou on his last leg of Icetea promo. Could be he was so relieved that he started making cutie faces ^__^ Anyway he looked supersweet in these pixs -- must be happy that he can have some rest at last. There were quite a lot of news articles but they mostly said the same thing abt his new studio album to be released yearend & movie next yr. He must be tired of answering the same questions over & over again.
Here's a pix courtesy & much thanks to DTFC that brings back memories & tears to my eyes. For his recent blog msg he used 'A new beginning' as the title & I wasn't sure what he meant. Maybe he is tired of being promoted like a 'heavenly king' cos he never wanted to be one. Seeing him put on lipbalm reminded me of those Soul Power days when all he did was play the music he loved. There was less rumors & gossips. But I must say I am proud of him now. His music journey this year was not an easy one fraught with rumors, bad press & more rumors. But David kept his head down & just did his work with vry little fanfare.
His answers & explanation to the media was short but to the point. Even though the media tried to sensationalised some of the articles with his rumored love affair but David refused to be provoked & maintained a dignified silence. The only mildly controversial item was when they claimed he said that new singers from singing contest can only be famous for 3 years. I am so glad that he put everything behind him & really did attempt a new beginning which seems to be working nicely. Thank you David for keeping it real.
Finally here at last is the full version of Laurel Heroes credit & much thanks to DTFC. It was recorded from a mainland chinese station & the song is apparently included in a cd commemorating the Beijing Olympics. Not sure what's the cd name or when it will be on sale. It's a great song & I love his freestyle of singing *__*

DT @ Shenyang
More articles on DT's media interview in Shenyang & some of them seem conflicting *sigh* like they are putting words in his mouth. I will go with this Sina one only cos they wrote that he sighed & said, "October but struggling" when asked abt his album release which is very DT ^__^ Of cos the headline once again made him sound arrogant but it was taken out of context. What he said was that since he is not an idol singer he doesn't like to have activities that are not work related, he prefers to be low key so he can do his work properly & not be asked all the time abt album release. Once his album is out then everybody can ask him questions to their heart's content. Short & sweet although the huge pix of him is rather offputting :P
Watch a promo clip where he answered media questions mostly abt the band competition organised by Icetea. Just so wonderful to watch him put so much effort into answering all the questions no matter how trivial & how he always managed to bring music into them. I like one answer he gave abt how he would also look at how contestants are dressed only cos he felt that to dress tidily is to respect the stage & the audience. That's always the impression he gives me with his media appearances even though he doesn't always like them but he will always try to put in 100% effort because he respects himself, the media, the viewers or readers. He is off to Quangzhou this weekend & hopefully the last leg of his Icetea promo. Lastly sina clip of him singing Can't you outta my mind in Shenyang & absolutely heartstealing pix snaffled from DTFC ^__^

DT @ Wuhan
David & DTFC fan with movie clapperboard ^__^ Actually did wonder if they will give him one cos its just so appropriate. His China fans are really thoughtful. Anyway in his media interview, he is still sticking to his plans of releasing album end of the year & completing all his contractual work so he can have time to film his movie next year. He did mention concerts also but mostly in China & Wuhan could be included but think its just to please his fans cos he dun always know his concert schedule :P
They asked if he worry that with so many newcomers that he will be replaced & of cos he said no. He is more concerned with the state of Chinese music & said that for 2-3 years he has yet to hear a good voice or good piece of music. However he is more optimistic after hearing the contestants today. He still hoped to get married before 40 but he will not divulge any details to the media as he felt it is his private affairs. He also said he dun need such rumors to get more news. Yeah, so back off paparazzi & leave the man alone *__* He is already 39 & dun think anyone care abt his marital status anymore. We just want to watch his movie!

Future DirecTor
Absolutely gorgeous screencap of DT the future director ^__^ courtesy of DTFC. So man, so musclely, so heavenly *yum* I like it.
Here he is in Wuhan all sweaty & yummy *__* luv his typewriter tee. He is looking a bit perplexed though & losing his 100% California tan. He needs to go home soon, Lucky must be missing him so much *sigh*

711 Birthday!
Dear David, hope you get some longevity peach buns on your birthday. They are filled with your favorite red bean paste. He arrived in Wuhan yesterday & the first thing he did when he got off the plane was to film his greeting fans much to their surprise. Here's the vid courtesy & much thanks to DTFC:
Dear dear he is manifesting his director spirit at last. Love the way he shouted at them, "See you tomorrow!" Can this man get any more adorable? Here's something interesting I found randomly. A real answer sheet in an English examination in China. The topic is Music and Young People & what's interesting is that David is the only chinese artist mentioned among the other western artists like Westlife, Usher & Justin Timberlake. Like I said DT is far more well-known, not popular but well-known, for his music in China than most ppl give him credit for.

1 day to DT's birthday
This panda is called Tai Shan & he lives @ Smithsonian Zoo in US. His birthday is on 7/9 so he is a Cancer like DT! Hehe any excuse to post cute panda pix but seriously this panda is incredibly popular - look at all the birthday wishes he got online. Not to mention the special panda cam to watch him 24/7. Now that's what missing on this blog - a special DT cam to watch him 24/7 ^__^ Hope Wuhan will be his last promo stop for Icetea & he gets some time off cos I worry he might not be able to finish both his album & movie script on time but then when is he ever on time :P
As the media are in a frenzy to pitch newcomers Jam against Yoga, just hope it will a relief for David so they stop focusing on him. He has said many times that he hates being compared. I don't understand why it is not possible to like both Jam and Yoghurt sry Yoga. They have vry different styles & Yoga has been compared to Eason Chan who is pretty unique in chinese entertainment. Although it was good strategy to move away from the Jay/Leehom wannabes, those are pretty big boots to fill. By the by Eason's chinese version of Under Mt Fuji was conveniently disqualified from GMA for some reason so less competition for Jay's Flowerpot. Luck always seem to be on his side like winning Golden Horse's Newcomer award when Fiona Sit whose debut screen performance was far more critically acclaimed did not even get nominated. One may even start to suspect strings were being pulled to make his wins less controversial. I know I am suspicious that way :P

2 days to DT's birthday
Vry adorable cutting his birthday cake with his DTFC fans, more pixs here. David then went on to Wenzhou to meet with the press. He was said to have dodged questions abt recent rumors & disinterested in GMA.
Don't think he would dodge rumors questions cos he has already clarified & if ppl dun wanna believe, what is there left to say? As for GMA, he wasn't even nominated. They made it sound as if he was a sore loser cos they mentioned Jay won 4 awards. Er ... Jay lost to David last yr for Best Song & dun think he was ever asked how he felt losing to David :P Anyway there is no pleasing everyone as no matter who won, there will always be criticism.
Anyway DT should be in Wuhan on Friday & will probably receive another cake ^__^ The ppl over @ DTFC have been busying rooting out snippets of his new song Laurel Heroes & there's even a ringtone available but so far the complete song has not been broadcasted yet. Some concert news is Jakarta tentatively in October & maybe Las Vegas in December.

4 days to DT's birthday
David continued his whirlwind promo to Shanghai where he met with the finalists of the band competition held by Icetea. He had many words of encouragement for them even promising that he will try his best to help them. He sang 3 songs for them starting with Susan Says & the evening ended with a surprise when his fans presented him with an early birthday cake & present ^__^ His ever faithful Japanese fans also gave him a VCR.
Plse don't make any comments abt his shirt >"< Apparently he was wearing a nice tee onstage but for interview & promo shots he wore this floral shirt & also had a thick layer of foundation plastered on his face. One thing to keep in mind is that DT is vry obliging where his stylist Jammy is concerned. They have been together for a long time & he unquestioningly accepts all Jammy's fashion tips which are mostly good. It could be that day David was having one of his perennial colds so the shirt & makeup were to make him look brighter for promo pixs. Again I really like the no-nonsense way he goes abt his promotion with vry little fanfare & just meeting his fans all over China. His fan network in China is extremely reliable & they usually put word out vry quickly abt when & where he is appearing. I think ppl usually underestimate his fanbase in China. He is known there more for his music than his celebrity status.
Take Hennessy Artistry for eg. It was such a success in China that this yr Chivas did the same kind of setup with Karen Mok & Blackeyed Peas singing live. David's live performance during Hennessy Artistry was such an eye-opener for ppl who had nvr attended his concerts. Here was a chinese singer who could put on a live concert just as good as the ones in the West. His powerful voice singing impromptu is always a pleasant surprise to a Chinese audience used to singers with untrained weak vocals singing in tandem to a karaoke machine. Or singing out of rhythm with the band. You know that's one thing that always bug me abt a lot abt Chinese singers & that includes quite a few famous ones. They nvr seem to be able to sing live in harmony with the band. It is like they are singing one song & the band is playing another. Sometimes they get terribly out of tandem that its just amateurish. Surely a singer should learn how to sing along with a live band, not expect the band to follow yr uneven singing. Maybe that could be why David vry seldom had guests in his concerts. Imagine the nightmares he will be having if his guest cannot sing along with his band :P
Was watching some red carpet clips of GMA & was mightily impressed with Yoga Lin (above with fellow cutie Tank), winner of the competition who was almost overshadowed by the antics of Jam Hsiao & Aska Yang. First time I saw him was in a cm for a motorbike where he was shaking his booty. Even though he has an extremely cute behind the whole thing made me go mmmmmm ^__^ But was surprised to find him so matured with a refreshing sincerity. He did not put up a cool persona nor pretend to be modest or tongue-tied. He is probably younger or looks younger than Jam or Aska but he handles the media with more maturity & sensibility. He is either incredibly smart or has an incredibly smart manager who lets him be himself. Probably a mixture of both. Now I understand why well-known musicians such as renowned HK lyrist Linxi was willing to work with Yoga on his debut album. Also now I remembered watching a clip of him praising David for being a great singer - someone posted @ Davidtao forum. This was when he attended producer Wang Zhi Ping's birthday party where David sang Beatles' Don't Let Me Down. Yoga said he was shocked at how good David sounded impromptu. He was impressed at how David still managed to adjust his vocals as he sang. This is the mark of the making of a great singer, one that can recognise & understand how good another singer is without prejudice *__*

5 days to DT's birthday
Just doing a countdown post for our boy's big day & also vry cool concert pix with Jamie. Nothing much happening except for GMA. For Khalil fans out there, sry he didn't get any awards which was rather surprising as all bets were on him to get best male singer and/or best album. Gary got best singer although a bored reviewer unkindly remarked that it doesn't matter who got it all the same. Tanya Chua got best singer a second time but lost out to Karen Mok on best album. The best moment said the same bored reviewer was when Lou Dayou presenting one of the numerous awards for Jay Chou jumbled up the title of his song proving that not everybody listens to Jay. Oh dear I think GMA's ambition to be known as the 'Grammies of the East' is kinda faltering.

6 days to DT's birthday
Dear blog, so sry but forgot yr birthday again but it really has been great so thank you & hope we can still be together for another 4 years while we follow DT wherever he may goes *__*
Not much news abt David at the moment. He did turn up @ Qingdao for Icetea promo & as usual got quoted out of context by the chinese press *roll eyes* The headlines screamed that he said new singers will only be famous for 3 years. What he said was that most of these new singers from mostly singing competitions gained fame immediately. He felt that they will be famous for abt 2 yrs then what abt the 3rd yr? He chided their record companies for not thinking ahead & planning a future for them. David will be heading for Wuhan nxt weekend.
Saw some news regarding Anson Hu who was in Taiwan for promo recently since the thawing of relationships with China. He wanted to be the first mainland singer to hold a largescale concert in Taipei. There's a feeling that EMI is grooming him as the successor to DT for the top spot of 'talented singer/composer with high quality works & not too commercialised'. Maybe they are not that confident that David will remain with them. But still it is good that EMI is planning ahead for Anson so he can have a bright future as a singer/composer for many yrs to come. It seemed that David has written a song abt the Olympics as opposed to an Olympic song submitted for consideration. The song is called Laurel Heroes & I love the title already hee but at the moment the song has not been released. Maybe he will include it in his new album. Just something random: saw a pix of DT taken by a fan of A-Mei & it was so adorable as he was holding a book abt pandas ^__^
