A MOMENT OF HAPPINESS

Sumtime glad haf this blog so I can rant heehee. Well, heard this silly woman on entertainment news said Jay 'pushed' aside David as commercial spokesman. Wow like David cares to be know for his commercial value. He is musician not spokesman. If companies want him to be spokesman & dun take up much of his time, then of cos he do it, but not sumthing he wanna be competing. And if Jay wanna be king of commercials, plse go ahead & put crown on his head cos looks much better on him than on David kekekekeke.
Lotsa anti-David ppl still dun understand that most David fans dun care if David dun get the awards, the commericals, the votes, the news. Not important at least to me, what David haf given me not measurable in awards or sales or votes. Remembered that I said David like Wong Kar Wai in music. Well, to me his music the same as WKW movie esp last scene in Fallen Angels. Its when Takeshi Kaneshiro gave Michelle Reis ride home on his bike & she said, "I haven't ridden bike for a long time. Actually haven't been this close to a guy for a while. The road isn't that long and I know I will be getting off soon, but right now I feel such warmth." U can watch here.
Cos life so transient, so mundane that a simple bike ride evoke such feeling cos it capture a moment of happiness. Its not fantasy or tragedy or romance, just this brief moment of pure happiness. David's music give me this feeling.

NEWS & REPLIES

Sum news re David's China concerts. Seemed he decided not do concert cos he wanna concentrate on new album. Oso he go to Taiwan early Sep to attend award show then back to LA to finish his album. Hope its true cos can get to see him in news. Whatever, David, we wait patiently 4 u.

Okie sum replies here. To S - I dun dislike Stefanie Sun but once watched her went on & on & on re her image in her new album, how she came up with it & ethnic influence, etc, etc, was waiting for her to say sumthing abt her music & she didn't so she lost me. Oso she may haf good voice but dun really do much except sum wild yodelling without feeling whatsoever. Just my opinion, not saying imma rite but that y dun listen to her.

To Will & lotsa ppl who kept saying David is old & no longer relevant, that's yr opinion & certainly u r entitled to it. I dun really care what non David fans say abt him. And yes, Liu Xiang does like David, I didn't made it up, its in all the chinese news. He even sang Black Tangerine, Melody and I Love You, as well as Jay's Dong Feng Po. He didn't say he like Jay, just said he likes David, & he said it b4 he got his gold medal. Even said he wanna to record with David. And yes I noe Yao Ming likes Jay, even tho I haf gone off Yao after he blamed everybody but HIMSELF for china bball losses at the Olympics. Maybe he should grow up, stop playing so much computer games & live up to reality not hype. Winning is not abt following a game plan but belief in yourself.

NET UPDATES

Chinese blog mentioning David, not sure what but anything with David worth mentioning here heehee. This article very spurious & irresponsible, ppl always used it to say David arrogant. Sumhow I really doubt its veracity, just dun sound like David, anyway read it and judge for yourself. Oso used this pic like hafing a cosy chat with David.

To be honest, haf vry little respect for most Singapore journalists cos from their articles can tell they usually dun do a lot of research & always tried to be too clever & pretend cynical. Criticism 4 criticism sake is just silly. Plse go & listen to David's Smart on repeat, kekekekekekekeke.

Okie this is really crazy but David music used in Wushu competition of all things, & y not it proved the POWER of David Tao! Click here to watch Junior Euros 2003 trailer using Shanghaied, & here to watch Worlds 2003 trailer using I Like It. Dun know much abt wushu but looked good esp with David music.

Finally interesting article by ABC on Taiwan. Vry diff Taiwan than the one I noe from watching entertaiment programs in hope of seeing David hahaha. Mentioned David as 1st impression of Taiwan, vry intriguing rite as like her, David grew up in US.

MORE CHINESE PRIDE

Liu Xiang became the first Chinese/Asian in history to win men's 110m hurdles at Olympics. He oso equalled the world record of 12.91 secs, & broke the Olympic record of 12.95 secs. His winning margin the biggest since 1988. He will forever be in the Olympics record book. He oso like to sing David's Black Tangerine, kekekekekekeke. Anyway another reason I post him cos of David's song Smart, the only popsong I noe that mentioned Chinese unity. Maybe there r others but I dun noe them. Really like Smart which David wrote for Tension's first album oso called Smart. Lyrics written by David still so relevant to Chinese around the world. Esp today when I overheard woman complaining abt mainland Chinese in Singapore. Singapore has yet to win a medal of any color at the Olympics, I feel they should go & listen to David's Smart on repeat, heehee. Anyway here r the lyrics.

SMART
Voiceover: Legends told of long, long ago when from the Southern Seas appear five martial youths. They have skills surpassing all their rivals, and they are looking for intelligence.

From day to night all you talk about is how smart you are,
In your eyes you are incomparable.
Eating, hanging out, learning, watching, all these you are skilled,
Calling yourself a prodigy, a natural taskmaster.
Actually we are always learning till we are old,
Better to understand your own limitations,
Don't set yourself too high and mighty,
Or you will loose all your friends.
Even if you have the winning hand,
It doesn't mean you are the world's best.
This is my advice to you,
Hope that you will comprehend,
Smart, smart, please don't think you are very smart,
Or you will become too obstinate.
In this world, you can never be too smart, smart.
Please don't think you are very smart,
Or you make everyone very agitated.
Don't be too smart, don't be too smart.
The words coming from your mouth,
Are always unstoppable criticisms.
You laugh at me, and belittle him,
All to prove your own ability.
When you do have some kind of problem,
All you take is some time to solve,
But like the unmovable rivers and mountains,
Your intolerable character is hard to change.
Actually we are learning till we are old,
Better to understand your own limitations,
Don't set yourself too high and mighty,
Or you will loose all your friends.
Even if you have the winning hand,
It doesn't mean you are the world's best.
This is my advice to you,
Hope that you will comprehend,
Smart, smart, please don't think you are very smart,
Or you will become too obstinate.
In this world, you can never be too smart, smart.
Please don't think you are very smart,
Or you make everyone very agitated.
Don't be too smart, don't be too smart.
Please don't be too obstinate,
And become too conceited,
Don't be too smart.
David's rap: We always think we are very capable, but after five thousand years we still haven't learnt our lesson. We have prosperity but lack a heart, these economic miracles are actually tragedies. Taiwan - you're my brother. Hong Kong - you're my brother. China - you're my brother. Chinese - we're all brothers. All we need is a little love, love, love.
Smart, smart, please don't think you are very smart,
Or you will become too obstinate.
In this world, you can never be too smart, smart.
Please don't think you are very smart,
Or you make everyone very agitated.
Don't be too smart, don't be too smart.
Music by David Tao, lyrics by David Tao, sang by Tension from their Smart album.

WE LOVE & SUPPORT YOU!

Upload vry old concert clip prolly 1998/9 after release of 1st album, 7 days limit okie.
David looked so sweet & can see alredi so good to his fans, getting real close to shake hands. As he said in his msg, he can no longer write songs like I love you & Blue Moon cos he no longer the guy in this concert. As his fans, we 2 dun want him to write similar songs. Altho as been said many times not necessary for change each album but definitely sumthing fresh & creative usually expected of David. So he under more pressure, vry painful but you can do it, David, with the support of us fans. I really think its important now to support Chinese musicians like David cos many years down the track what happen when Chinese music haf nothing to show. Cos whether u want to admit or not, but cool trendy music can nvr last cos they r easily dated. Not downgrading Cpop but they really can only define a certain period. I came to David Tao only a yr ago but to me, his music from 1st album to Soul Power concert still so fresh & relevant. I find he almost like Wong Kar Wai of the music world hehehehehehe, take forever to come up with their works but every 1 of them worth the wait.

"IT WILL BE DONE WHEN IT'S DONE"

2nd msg from David, omg, its so unreal, surreal almost. As if a statue you worship come alive & step off his pedestal. Dun know how else to describe my feeling. David to me haf been this idol far far far outta reach, sumone I admire, respect, adore, but like a star in the sky twinkling away. Now its real, almost touchable, & a bit strange. But imma ok with it now. David haf described his frustrations & pain producing his next album & I think he need to reach out to the ppl who matter most, his fans (me included!!!!!!!!). It prolly take a lot of courage & strength to express yourself so openly in a fan forum. If u think abt it, instead of physically travelling & appearing in city after city, or even country after country, to get close to his fans, David chose to do it via the net, the easiest, fastest, most effective way to communicate. It makes lotsa sense rite? Such a modern hero is our David dun u think? I think he will blush if he ever read this heehee. Anyway David said that his album "will be done when it's done" and will be different from his previous 3 albums. Just can't wait but must be patient. Hope to hear from u again David real soon okie.

Btw the pix above is my current fav & go here to read David's msgs.

MUSIC WORTH THE WAIT

Prolly the most recent pix of David when he came over 4 promo for 006, post it so ppl remember what he looks like kekekekekekekekeke, cos it seems so long. But maybe can hear 1 of his new song, seem he wrote a rock song for Fish/Tiffany/Jasmine Leong. Nice girl but y so many name change??? Actually think Fish Leong the best as its unique.

Anyway its 4 her new album due Oct I think but not sure. Anyway seemed record co was surprised dat David wrote rock song cos they prolly expecting usual r&b stuff, but Leong happy & even learnt to dance so as to surprise David. Seems Leong idolised David 2 like Selina of SHE. Hopefully David's rock song will be change 4 Leong as tho I like her voice, her songs becoming predictable. Okie not that change is sumthing dat a singer should do, I mean if singer feels no need to change, I think its fine so long as fans like it. But if yr fans r more mature & musically developed like David fans then need growth with his music. Dat what being a musician is all abt, u allow fans to see yr music evolve as the world evolve.
I feel dat of all the chinese musicians today, David the closest to doing dat. He really put lotsa effort into his music. One fan at Davidcn.com even said that Today's News like audio movie cos the snippets of news becoming faster & faster so u feel tense till the anti-climax at the end when a woman said, "There is no solution at the moment." David took 4 days to edit Today's News. U really haf to listen to Today's News & Dear God together I feel, not complete otherwise. Lotsa ppl oso felt that 2. Really the 4 songs Black Tangerine, Today News, Dear God, Angel r best heard together. So even tho David takes long time with his album, worth the wait 4 all his diehard fans. Think David dun care if he is not dat popular or ppl forget abt him, dat not important, more important is to maintain his high standard & continue to give his fans rare but great music album.

CHARITY WORK

As always, David low key abt his charity work. First Solar 2000 Concert in HK, pix is small but Nic Tse, Daniel Chan, Wang Lee Hom & Eason Chan were there. David wrote the song Solar 2000, here can see who sang what, courtesy of josephine fr davidtao.org, oso translation. This concert 4 Renewable, Sustainable, Non-Polluting and Environmentally Safe Energy Sources is kinda worldwide project but 5 top males singers appearing on stage at the same time! I haf most of the concert files including Lee Hom singing Bastard & David singing Julia but they r in a computer in storage down under *sigh*
Then 4 World Children's Day when he was spokesman for McDonald, he sang Aren't they all our children with Sandy Lam, produced by Anthony Lun. If u haf not heard this song, can dl at DTFC english forum, if u like One last cry, u like this song.
Then of cos for SARS, he & Lee Hom composed Hand in hand & involved many singers in Taiwan.
This yr he sang in Christian concert in Singapore, again can dl sounds clips fr DFTC english forum.
Oso he organised Love & Hope Charity concert with Eason Chan, Wang Lee Hom & Elva Hsiao, pix courtesy of Pusanna, to raise money 4 poor unmarried mothers.
He oso donated money to children charities. He seemed to like charity 4 kids & environment like trailer 4 protection of komodo dragons. Oso he nvr publised, all vry low key, if not 4 the article I unearthed, nobody knew that he did trailer or helping to revise Taiwan education system. He did these charities cos he really want to help not to give himself a halo in public & help sell his album. If u really really really want to help & make the world a better place, no need to spend money & publicise, just do it like David!

HELLO FROM DAVID!

Felt so excited as THE MAN has posted msg on davidcn.com for the vry first time. We knew that he visited occasionally but so nice of him 2 actually leave msg. The great pix above courtesy of davidcn of cos, hope they dun mind me posting but just wanna show him wishing DTFC happy birthday. Wonder if he visit my blog, hope not cos I just post nonsense really to pass my time. But really wanna more people 2 know abt David cos his music really touched me a lot. Just felt he so geninue fr the way he interact with his parents, then mentioning his dog Lucky all the time, open & frank abt his faith to being so gracious to Selina & all his fans (me included haha) for their adoration of him, even said he wasn't deserving. We miss you so much David, hurry up & come outta yr hibernation vry soon okie!

Forget to link this if u wanna read his msg. David, I really adore u so much now.

GANGSTA DAVID, STREET STYLE

Okie just upload this file for a look at gangsta David heehee. If u r new to David, u will be surprised! This live performance at Golden Melody in Taiwan prolly 2000/01 after release of I'm OK album. The other rapper is DJ George, well known mtv vj in Taiwan. Just luv this street style David with his freestyling kekekekekekekeke. Check out the hiphop chain dangling from his pants, haha, just so adorable. I respect, admire & adore the present David, but this David I definitely can idolised to bits!

BANNED IN CHINA

Hi Nancy, Shirley & anonymous, thanx so much for yr comments. Both the song & title r great rite, I like vry much. Find out the meaning of shanghaied when sum china fans asked David & he told them to check dictionary so I did! He can be cheeky but vry sweet kekekekekekeke. Still dun understand the lyrics tho as translated by my mom who oso like the song. Yah, u r rite, Shirley, Shanghaied is banned in mainland China cos the chinese title Today don't want to go home is considered bad eg for youngsters. His other songs banned r Bastard, Different, Today's News & Smart.

SHANGHAIED

Screencaps of David's Shanghaied, vry strange song, like it alot altho still dun know what it meant. Think even David oso dun quite know cos the the lyrics quite odd. Oso ppl r confused abt the title which is vry clever. Shanghaied meaning to trick, kidnap or detent by force. Origin fr an actual ancient practice of kidnapping drunk sailors to put them on board ships sailing 2 far east usually Shanghai. Seeing as David always write fr experience, I think he oso writing abt himself lost & bewildered by the world today, not by a woman hehehehehehehe. Oso like the mv a lot done by Craig Robinson with pixelised images, luv the David & the Elvis Presley ones. Here can watch the director's cut altho dun see the diff. Vry creative & should haf won award instead of Korean ripoff by u know who kekekekekekekekekeke. Anyway here r the lyrics.

(Shanghainese)Welcome! How are you? Do you like Shanghai? Shanghai is so lovely!
Fascinating sights so many and endless
Must try and see each and every one
Come on!
Heard there is one night legend over there
What sort of spell did she put on me
Or what kind of medicine did she give me?
This town of yore has bewitched both men and women
Make me forget from where I came and where I am going
But I will regret if I leave
Because of her....
Happiness become instantaneous
She dazzles with her eyes
Her hands wave at me
All the while smiling
Because of her....
Everybody chasing and rushing
All acting brave
Wanting to foot the bill
Thank her for the special treatment
Yesterday I didn't go home (bewildered and confused)
Don't want to go home
Today I also will not go home (bewildered and confused)
I don't have a home
Here you see a demolished building
While over there another being built
Under the colourful neon lights
Are brightly dressed men and women (they never stop)
Rich or poor, they all want to be part of the action
The nightlife is too alluring
Because of her....
I forsake my past
Even the memory of the moment I was bewitched by her
Because of her....
I follow by her side
But talking of sentiment
She just closes her eyes and laughs
"Thank you, please come again tomorrow."
Yesterday I didn't go home (bewildered and confused)
Don't want to go home
Today I also will not go home (bewildered and confused)
I don't have a home
Carrying a single suitcase
Risking my life in this garden of paradise
When I stop dreaming in the night
And loneliness creep into my heart
Then I ask myself, "Where am I now?"
Yesterday I did not....
(shanghainese) When will you come back?
Today I also will not....
(shanghainese) Don't forget to call me!
Yesterday I didn't go home
Today I also will not go home
(shanghainese) Are you thinking of me?
Yesterday I didn't go home (bewildered and confused)
Don't want to go home
Today I also will not go home (bewildered and confused)
I don't have a home
(Where are you going?)
Don't go home
Don't want to go home
(Where do you want to go?)
Don't go home
Don't want to go home
Fascinating sights so many and endless
Must try and see each and every one
Come on!
Heard that there is one night legend over there
Everyone looking for the promised land
Don't want to go, don't want to go
Don't want to go home.........

THE POWER OF DAVID TAO

Horrid combination, flashy shirt, army pants & fist with thumb up hehehehehehehehe but still looking quite sweet, but the other real horrid, yucky pink lips & stiff hair.

This one like a lot cos he looked natural & tanned, the top real nice but seldom see him wear. See he can look great.
Look here another blog devoted to David! Pretty sure its thai. And here sum songwriter inspired by his music. The power of David Tao!

THE IMPERFECT DAVID

The best screen captures I haf seen. Link courtesy davidcn.com Really nice, sum program broadcast in china lately. Guess David fans r getting impatient & kept asking when David gonna release album. *sigh* dun haf the answer myself, 2 long for it altho I am not impatient, still listening to his music & loving it. I mean u dun ask when Mozart or Beethoven going to release album rite? Yes, I know they r dead but dun mean u dun listen to their stuff altho they haf heaps & I haf not listen to all. But u know what I mean, good stuff u can listen over & over again. But its true David haf too little albums & all his own fault, he has alredi admitted. He is not perfect of course so I list his faults:
  • Too slow & too much of perfectionist, sumtimes things that r not perfect can be perfect in its imperfection. Like his One Last Cry far from perfect but ppl just love it cos the way he sang match the hopelessness of the song.
  • Control freak esp the way he control Tension. Think its time to let Tension do their own stuff. I think if allow their own creativity, Tension can surprise us with their next album. Btw Tension releasing compilation album soon, include new theme song 4 Taiwan baseball team or sumthing. Haf oso include their new chinese forum Attension in the links.
  • Lecture 2 much. Tension haf said many times that David talks too much & not only that, but when he is lecturing, impossible to say anything or escape. They r afraid of meetings with him.
  • No fashion sense. Sumtimes he wear his fav pants over & over again, or a shirt, esp his fav brand Adidas, & he haf funny way to match his clothes like red & green. Once wore a brightly coloured shirt over his fav army green pants, horrid. Dun seem to care if makeup artist applied yucky pink lipstick, or stiffen his hair 2 much. Always open his mouth or make a fist with thumb up when taking pixs. Think he should change stylist cos he can look so much better then we fans haf better pixs to enjoy. His Soul Power concert clothes r great, pity he can't wear them offstage.

Other than that, David plse dun change cos we love u just the way u r, & oso if u could plse hurry up with yr album.

    DAVID, JACKIE & JAYCEE

Jaycee Chan, Jackie Chan's son, & David standing next to his dad at sum award show in China. Post Jaycee cos he mentioned in 1 of his interviews that he envied David cos he only do music, dun need to do movies, promos, endorsements, etc. Just wondered if Jaycee so interested in music, why dun he just focus on it like David? What stopping him? Oso just amazed at how he depended on his parents. His mum who apparently well know movie star turned up at sum promos creating news. His dad replaced him at 1 Coco Cola promo in China cos he was busy filming & it became like huge event. I read news report cos David was oso there but more low profile. Actually Jaycee seems like a vry nice guy, except maybe he should stand on his own two feet a bit more? U can listen to his song here, dun what to say except maybe he should focus on making movies.

    UNBELIEVABLE WANG LEE HOM

Lee Hom will be holding concert in Bejing on 21/8 & his guest the lovely Karen Mok. Click here to watch really nice Homie interview at Tom. More pixs all very stunning, dun think the man ever look bad, just too HOT. Extremely talented 2 & quietly spreading his music in China. Homie haf to be seen cos he just marvellous on stage singing, dancing & playing piano, volin, drums to erhu! Not to mention his hot bod & great looks. This man so perfect sumtimes u wonder if he is real. Anyway David said to be his guest many times so hopefully he turn up at the Changsha concert in Sept. Homie always sing Hand in hand song & my greatest wish is they sing it together.

    BACK TO NORMAL BROADCAST

Another gorgeous pix to enjoy. Oso haf put another song online, demo version of God Created Woman originally sang by Andy Lau. Like both versions altho think David was having fun here as went out of tune a few times but really nice to hear.
Only up for 7 day okie. Oso nice mention of David on this foreign blog, not sure what language but could be Brazil.

    DEAR GOD

Just finished watching the 6.30 news
    Tragedy is being enacted again
    There's a mother holding her son's photo
    Longing for his return
    Cannot finish watching this vision
Turn my head and my tears begin to flow
    Punishment or a test?
How many hearts are waiting to be broken?

Love, love, the world has forgotten about love
Nobody believe, nobody believe, love anymore
Justice and peace has become a joke
I really don't want to live in this kind of city

Topics of violence and bloodshed are common news
    Becoming entertainment, no reasoning
Escapism for the masses, everybody playing games
But if you don't have the money, nobody cares
In my heart I feel the rage
But I can only calm down and be numb
Using lives as stake for gambling
How long will all these crazes last?

Love, love, love in this world has no meaning
Nobody cares, nobody cares, there is no love
I really want to open my mouth and shout abuse
But it's not my crime, it's not my crime
    Please don't blame me

    Dear God
Why do You close your eyes and not solve the problems
Why pretend not to see, why pretend not to see
    Please tell me
Please tell how I can find and let love return
Because its impossible for me to leave this forsaken city
    I cannot leave, oh no
Because this forsaken city, this forsaken city
    It's still my home

Just watch the news broadscasting from afar
    It's like a neverending nightmare
Please give me some strength to continue living
    Dear God, where are You?

Music by David Tao, lyrics by David Tao & Wah Wah, sang by David Tao from his Black Tangerine album

    THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Here is a nice review of David at Anita Mui's concert. Ok dun really wanna bring up Anita here cos respect her & everything, but read again ppl saying that they r lovers. Plse the woman had CERVICAL CANCER 2 yrs before she died! Anita would be in discomfort & bleeding occasionally. Last thing on her mind would be sex let alone a lover, so plse get yr mind outta the gutter. Anyway here a really nice active website in memory of Anita, a true legend.

The other thing is this chinese writer amusingly using 'entertainment correctness' like 'political correctness' to describe the mafialike behavior of ppl in Taiwan when their golden boy, Jay Chou, is being criticised. And imma glad that at last someone feel the same I do. Cos I am tired of Jay & I wanna freedom to say so. I AM TIRED OF JAY, HIS SONGS, HIS VOICE, HIS IMAGE & EVERYTHING ABT HIM. I am sry to say that I dun think he is a genius & not cos of David. Even if there is no David, I will still feel the same. I dun hate him or anything nor will I say anything bad abt his personal life, but I do haf a right to criticise him cos his music & image does intrude into my life when I go out. I cannot block out a portion of my life just to avoid him, and why should I do that. So I must haf the right to say that I think he is the worst singer & writes the worst songs that I know in chinese. I know his fans will hate me for saying that but I can't help what I feel. I oso dun think much of Mayday, FIR, Yida & Stefanie Sun but at least their fans dun react in mafialike fashion. But for the worst chinese entertainer it has to be Jay Chou. I even rate him above William Hung. Why? Cos William for all his faults did not film an expensive mv abt the suffering of children in war. Thank u for yr concern jay, but for yr info, the world is not at war, there r conflicts yes, but most parts of the world is peace, & while there is much suffering of children during war, the worst & major killer is the suffering during peacetime for so many reasons - diseases, floods, abuse - & these r happening at yr doorstep, Jay cos I believe u r chinese. If u r so concerned abt the suffering of children, u could follow chinese pianist Lang Lang's example & become Unicef ambassador

Dun haf to wear military uniform & film a feel good mv, the intention may be noble but after the music ended & u go back to yr nice safe home, the ASIAN & AFRICAN children go on suffering & suffering & suffering & suffering & suffering & suffering in PEACETIME. So plse just keep to yr fantasy world to sell yr albums. If u disagreed with my views, thats fine, but I claimed the first amendment for my blog.

    TRYING OUT NEW STUFF

Yup since most like to look at his pixs so imma try out this free photo publishing thingie from blogger. Here's the first:

like this pix alot cos it show off his bod heehee
Its kinda small but will see if can resize to bigger okie.

Even his side view kinda cute

    Like the funny look teehee

    Seriously listening

    Another banana pix!

DON'T CALL ME 'KING OF R&B'

David haf nvr wanted to be known just 4 his r&b songs, but its a label ppl kept putting on him. U find that the chinese media quite often use him usually to point out that other singers r better at r&b than him which to me is pointless. How can u compare? U dun read that Usher's r&b is better than Michael Jackson but not so good as Craig Davids, or that Brian McKnight is the king of r&b. Just feel that the chinese media is generally vry childish and undeveloped when talking abt music & musicians. Anyway managed to find another article that is fair to him, not many of these around so will transcribe here.

He was called the "King of R&Bs," even though he has said he hates the nick name. He was compared to Jay Chou (Zhou Jielun), even though he has asked the media never to make the comparison.
At the press conference to promote his new album, "Ultrasound 1997-2003", David Tao (Tao Zhe) just couldn't win. "Please don't call me the 'King of R&Bs,' I am not king of anything," said the 34-year-old singer, "People would think I only do R&B with such a glorious title, but actually there are many different elements in my music, like rock. I don't want to put such limits on my music."
Born in Hong Kong, raised in Taipei, and now living in Los Angeles, David Tao started his career as the songwriter behind such pop superstars as Jeff Chang (Zhang Xinzhe), Cyndi Chaw (Zhao Yonghua) and A Mei (Zhang Huimei).
He released his first album "David Tao" in 1997, but it was his second album, 1999's "I'm OK", that brought him widespread acclaim, largely thanks to the hit song "Rain" (Zhaoziji).
In an age when most pop stars make sure they're constantly in the spotlight for fear of being forgotten, Tao, refreshingly, keeps his own pace, which is why it took him three years to release "Black Tangerine" (Heise Liuding), a surprising album thanks to the hard rock of the title track.
"'Black Tangerine' is one of my favourite songs, and it's rock, not R&B," Tao said at the time of its release. "But that doesn't mean I'm a rock singer.
"I like rock because I like the revolutionary attitude underlying it. The song expresses my concerns about society. Music should be able to deliver such messages and exert critical power. I like Cui Jian and John Lennon for the messages in their music."
Talking about the new album, Tao was especially enthusiastic about "Runaway", which is influenced a lot by American country music.
"It's a song written for all the dream seekers. If you have a dream, whatever it is, you should try your best pursuing it. That's the meaning of life."

    WHO'S SINGING HIS SONGS?

Babes, The Party, Hulahu, Eric Suen, Alton Zhou, Charlie Yeung, Cyndi Chao, Alex To, A-Mei, Sarah Chen, Ronald Cheng, Jeff Chang, Tanya Chua, Nic Tse, Wang Lee Hom, Daniel Chan, Tony Leung, Jordan Chan, Sandy Lam, Matilda Tao, Jay Chou, Leo Ku, Edmond Leung, Freya Lin, LA Boyz, BAD, Anita Mui, Elva Hsiao, Karen Mok, SHE, Jo Kyu Chan, Eason Chan, Tension, Power Station.

Sum he wrote & produced, others doing covers, Nic Tse sang song he wrote for sum HK event called Solar 2000. There r oso sum mainland singers who haf covered his songs especially I Love You but dun know their names. But anyway quite an impressive list I think. Blue Moon prolly his most covered song & will come up with diff versions later. After his self titled album in 1997, he was prolly the most sought after music producer in Taiwan so he flew back to LA to avoid this kinda pressure. He still very much in demand now not just Taiwan & HK, but singers like Sun Nan in mainland China, Jo Kyu Chan in Korea and sum female Japanese singer whose name I cannot translate oso want to work with him. And dun think its cos he is a talented composer but David will not only record a demo, but arrange, produce, does the backup vocals and maybe even play an instrument or two.

    DAVID @ WORK

At his office in Taipei, surrounded by awards & posters.

At the recording studio, he seemed to like bananas alot.

Online chat, he looked sweet wearing cap

8th musical instrument he can play, but not important how many instruments he can play as noticed he only played guitar in his concerts as he wanna concentrated on his singing. He played the piano 2 but I think only cos his fans liked it. But if he haf to, he can play all the instruments for his album in the studio.

This song came from the movie Wizard of Oz and first sang by Judy Garland; it oso became her signature song. Listen here Here r guitar chords

    Somewhere Over the Rainbow
(Music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg)
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high,
    There's a land that I heard of
    Once in a lullaby.
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
    Really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
    Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me.
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly.
    Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?
    If happy little bluebirds fly
    Beyond the rainbow
    Why, oh why can't I?

    David bitten by Komodo Dragon!

Kekekekekekekekeke but not recently of cos. When he was in Singapore to shoot TV trailer for the protection of komodo dragons for Discovery Channel & got a shock when it bit him on the hand, wish could see the trailer. Mentioned in this article which took me a long time to find. Just remember reading it in the old dt.org forum I think & liking it a lot cos it was vry fair to David unless sum others. Oso he explained abt writing Katrina. Anyway just in case it disappeared again, I transcribed here, the bit abt komodo dragon almost at the end kekekekekekeke just so cute & adorable.
Love brings on the songs for David
    By Chang May Choon
AT the grand old age of 30, R&B popster David Tao finally penned his first song for a woman he fancied.
Her name is Katrina, and he spotted her behind a cosmetics counter in a shopping mall near his home in Los Angeles two years ago.
'It was love at first sight!' the singer-composer exclaimed, eyes shining and voice flushed with excitement.
For a moment, he looked more like an infatuated Romeo than the serious musician he is known to be.
'When I saw her, I was like, 'Wow!', and I don't normally do that,' quipped the chatty Shanghai-born, LA-based star.
'She was gorgeous! She had short hair - and I have a thing for short hair - very petite, and she had beautiful features... like an Asian version of Charlize Theron.'
So smitten was he, the usually introverted David went back to ask her name, and quickly composed a song for her.
Then he made a demo CD and gave it to her, together with a bouquet of white lilies.
'I told her, 'You don't know me. I don't want anything from you, and I'm not some crazy freak',' he recalled, laughing.
'I said, 'I just want to tell you that you're absolutely beautiful.' Then I left.
'She was totally shocked! She was like, 'I don't know what to say... I'm totally flattered!'.'
That's it? Didn't he try to ask her out?
'No, I didn't need to know her or date her. I just had an urge to write a song for her, and I followed it through,' he told The New Paper in the comfort of his plush suite in Swissotel The Stamford.
At the time, he was dating a showbiz newbie called Melody.
'But she knew what I was doing, and she was okay with it,' he said.
Now that they have broken up after being together for four years for 'personal reasons', he has also written a song dedicated to her.
Both songs are included in his new album, Black Tangerine.
For someone known to be serious, no-nonsense and cocky sometimes, the 32-year-old musician has a surprisingly soft and romantic side too.
In town last week to promote his new album, he recalled how he once spent several weeks compiling a scrapbook for his ex-girlfriend, with photos and mementos spanning a few years.
'She was very surprised, because I'm not an arts and craft guy,' he laughed.
'But I'm a very sentimental person.'
But he wouldn't be caught dead watching chick flicks with his date.
'Sorry, but that's one thing I cannot do!' he quipped, bursting into a guffaw.
Not that he has so much time anyway.
Writing and producing music already occupies most of his day, he said.
When he's done with his album promotions, he will start preparing for a concert tour that will kick off at the end of this year.
In his free time, he reads, visits museums or hangs out with friends.
He also trains, lifts weights, practises yoga and takes his dog out for strolls.
But now that he's single, will he look Katrina up?
    Smiling, he replied: 'Not necessarily...
'(The song) was just a form of appreciation, not like I had to chase her or anything.'
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Serious about music
WHEN discussing music, David turns serious.
He doesn't mince his words, and won't hesitate to slam bad music.
He said the Asian pop scene is flooded with CDs that lack sincerity and creativity, and that, to him, is 'pollution'.
Is he being cocky, or simply frank? You decide.
But as a singer-composer who has propelled the entire R&B craze in Taiwan since 1997, he has earned the respect of not only fans, but also dozens of fellow artistes.
When he performed at Far East Square last Tuesday, at least six local singers - including Ho Yeow Sun, Tanya Chua, Joi Tsai, Faith Yang, Cai Lilian and Ric Low - turned up to show their support.
Even Jay Chou, reigning prince of R&B, treats him with utmost respect.
His musical talent aside, David is also bold enough to make social criticism, instead of writing cheesy songs about love.
Maybe it has to do with his interest in the human sciences.
A graduate in psychology from the University Of California, he worked as a cop in LA for a year after graduation, before being talent-scouted - in a record store - to write music fulltime.
In his latest album, Black Tangerine, he lashes out against the unnecessary graphic violence in the media, and mocks the tragic love classic, Dreams Of The Red Mansion.
He said: 'Music is a medium for me to express something, to tell a story, or share my personal feelings.'
For issues he feels strongly about, he will take action in real life.
He is working with groups in Taiwan to propose 'a big revamp to the Chinese education system', he said.
When he was here, the animal lover also visited the zoo to record a TV trailer for the protection of komodo dragons for Discovery Channel.
'But I got a shock when it bit me on my hand!' he said, laughing.
Coming back to music, David raved about how Western stars like Madonna, U2, Coldplay and even N' Sync ('Justin Timberlake can really sing!'), devote themselves wholeheartedly to producing quality albums.
But the media-savvy guy was careful not to slime any Asian colleagues.
What about the wildly popular F4, whose cringe-worthy singing was slammed by Time magazine?
'They are what they are... an idol group. They don't claim to be musical geniuses,' he said tactfully.
'Lots of artistes have no control. The record labels don't take time to groom them. They are just puppets... just smile and look good.'
What about Jay, who is said to be his biggest rival?
'Jay is very talented and innovative. I expect good things from him,' he said without hesitation.
'I hope he'll continue to be very sincere, and be a positive influence on young people.'
